How much output current is available?

A 10kW generator is commonly described as about 12.5kVA at a 0.8 power factor. The approximate rated current depends on the specified kVA and voltage:

Single phase current = kVA x 1000 / voltage
Three phase current = kVA x 1000 / (1.732 x line voltage)

These are planning calculations, not a substitute for the generator nameplate or electrical drawing. Frequency, voltage tolerance, power factor, breaker rating, cable size and derating are part of the final design.

Why phase balance matters on a small generator

A three-phase generator can often supply 230V single-phase circuits from phase to neutral, but loading one phase heavily while the others are light can cause voltage imbalance, overheating and reduced usable capacity. The alternator maker sets an allowable unbalance limit.

Prepare the load schedule by phase. Put lighting, sockets, refrigerators and air conditioners into separate rows, then show which phase each circuit uses. If nearly all the protected equipment is single phase, a single-phase generator may provide a simpler and more usable result.

Three-phase pumps or workshop motors require their rated kW, current, starting method and duty. Direct-on-line starting can require much more generator capacity than the motor's normal running power suggests.

Should I buy a single-phase or three-phase 10kW generator?

Choose from the actual site supply and loads. A site using only 230V single-phase circuits commonly needs a single-phase set. A site with three-phase motors or distribution may need a three-phase set.

Can a three-phase generator power single-phase equipment?

It can when correctly configured, but the single-phase loads must be distributed so one phase is not overloaded. Confirm neutral, voltage, protection and alternator limits.

Does a three-phase 10kW generator provide 10kW on each phase?

No. The total rating is shared across all three phases. It is not 10kW per phase.
